Shaper | Faze Surfboards

Surfing began for me on the Victorian coastline in the late 80's. As a kid, I was shuffled around the coastal towns of Lorne, Ocean Grove, Fairhaven and Torquay. Not complaining though, they were all equally as rad with surf rich coastlines. Now, only a short drive from Hobart, I am calling southern Tasmania home.

My first surfboard was shaped and built by Howard Hughes Surf Craft in Aireys Inlet. Knowing the Hughes family, I spent most of my days after school in his Aireys factory / showroom, running my hands over the new surfboards in the racks.

We moved to Torquay in 1994 & I ordered my first custom surfboard from Micheal Anthony. Micheal was a local shaper from Torquay and shaped boards at Rip Curl's Moonlight Laminating facility made well known by gun laminator Russ Graham, father of Corey Graham Shapes.

In 2000 at the age of 17, I began building boards for Maurice Cole. Starting out as most do, sweeping floors, filla-coats and repairs. Watching and learning from experienced sanders and laminator's as well as the other shapers working for Maurice at the time.

In 2005 I made the move over to Strapper Surfboards and was making everything from Kneeboards and Longboards to Performance short boards for local surfers Jack Perry, Adam Robertson and Cahill Bell-Warren. All the while, I was contracting out on weekends sanding surfboards for shapers including Maurice Cole, Rousa, Mark Phipps and B.A.S.E shapers Darren Handley and Simon Anderson.

In 2016 I started Faze Surfboards in Tasmania where I create a small number of custom surfboards each year using traditional techniques and materials. I love to create something that brings joy and stoke to the customer. My boards are a mix of bespoke feel, fun and performance.

Today, I am located on the Gold Coast working and sanding in the GlassLab factory as a sander. I'm always up for a chat and or beers so, hit me up and lets talk about your next board!

Thank You Vissla.

The last couple of years I have been lucky enough to take part in the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro at Manly Beach. Vissla constructed a temporary shaping bay at North Steyne. Shapers from around the world got together at the QS6000 rated event (pre challenger series) to shape and share the love!

Huge thanks to Vissla for their support over the years!

Cheers,

Finn
